Gun Rights Proponents Support Abortion Providers

It is believed that people with widely differing perspectives may come together due to a common political cause. According to The Texas Tribune’s political reporter James Barragán, that is true for a part of the resistance to the new abortion prohibition in the state.

Abortion providers are against the new law, but it is perhaps more surprising that even the gun rights organization Firearms Policy Coalition opposes it.

As for Barragán, they have filed a brief at the Texas Supreme Court claiming that they have a problem with the new piece of legislation. At stake is the one-of-a-kind enforcement mechanism in the Texas legislation, which is enforceable through private lawsuits but not the state.

Barragán wondered what would happen if a state, where people predominantly vote for the Democratic Party, enacts a piece of legislation restricting gun rights. Barragán also considered whether the rights require the same enforcement mechanism option, where only private citizens get to do the enforcement. According to Barragán, that would complicate challenging a piece of state legislation in US federal court for American gun rights proponents. That was an important topic of debate at the Texas Supreme Court’s recent oral arguments.
