Lawmakers Disagree On Fourth Special Legislative Session Requirement

The 87th Legislature in Texas had three special legislative sessions and one standard session earlier this year. This begs the question of whether the legislative sessions are gone forever. Texas Tribune journalist James Barragán reports that that is perhaps the case, at least according to Governor Greg Abbot’s viewpoint.

Many of Abbot’s legislative priorities could survive throughout the special session in September 2021, said Barragán. The priorities included restrictions for transgender students cum athletes as well as the redistricting work that was put in place for the session. According to Barragán, almost all the legislative agenda of Abbot got passed.

Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick demands not just a fourth legislative session for more stringent criminalization of US voting fraud and errors but also an electoral forensic bill.

As for Barragán, Abbot and Patrick are slightly at odds about the matter, and it does not seem that another special legislative session is imminent.
