Prominent Republican Calls For Steve McCraw’s Resignation

Chief Steve McCraw of the Texas Department of Public Safety is facing growing calls to resign, at the heels of the Uvalde mass shooting which occurred at Robb Elementary School. Families of the survivors as well as gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke are calling for McCraw’s resignation, after it was revealed that 91 DPS officers happened to be on scene at the time of the shooting, and yet delayed a confrontation with the gunman for upwards of an hour.

“This is Rep. Tony Gonzalez of Congressional District 23, which covers Uvalde,” says James Barragán of The Texas Tribune. “This is different. In the past, it’s been Democrats; it’s been Beto O’Rourke, very recently. But never a Republican, seriously saying ‘Hey, there was mistakes made and he needs to go.’”  Now that is happening. So it will be interesting to see whether this snowballs or is just one congressman who represents the district.”
