Texas Governor Greg Abbot signed many new bills earlier this June, including the one about constitutional or permitless carry of handguns. Abbot’s action attracted a great deal of attention at the time.

The Texas Tribune’s Cassi Pollock said that the so-called permitless carry bill would be effective on September 01, 2021. The Texas Compassionate-Use Program’s expansion would also take effect at that time. The program encompasses Texas medical marijuana-related initiatives. Eligibility and tetrahydrocannabinol potency were expanded to an extent, but Pollock said that the tweaks failed to meet what many marijuana proponents had been seeking.

Abbot faced a deadline to veto bills, which included legislation about a portion of the budget that would fund the Texas Legislature.
